Open rebuilds of paid creative apps.

ComfyUI's Open Source Higgsfield challenge closes Friday at 9 AM PT, and its entries include an agent-driven video editor, a Gaussian-splat object editor and a city-to-Unreal-level pipeline. A 2K refiner for MiniMax H3 drafts was released openly, with a first test that found it sharp but prone to changing an actor's performance, and Claude Code kept moving into motion design and games. 87 verified items from the last day.

Open-H3-Regenerate-2K: an open 2K refiner for MiniMax H3 drafts (Hugging Face)

The model page is dated 26 October and community ports and tests arrived in the last day; it is a LoRA adapter published as an open alternative to a closed regeneration API. Per the model page it refines a 768P draft (1344×768, 121 frames) in a three-step pass to 2560×1440, and on a single B200 a 5-second clip took 22.45 seconds with the fast VAE decoder (87.26 with the standard one); parts of it fall under the MiniMax H3 Community License. A Reddit tester who ran it on an RTX 4090 found the default strength very crisp but prone to changing an actor's expression (details below).

How to start install the community ComfyUI node listed under Video (it downloads the weights on first run), feed it a short H3 draft of a landscape, animal or product shot, and lower the strength for faces, as the tester did.

OpenKatana: an open-source editing engine your AI agent drives (GitHub)

Photos, footage and music in, a finished edit out, with cuts, transitions, motion, typography and music made through code in one shared project that ComfyUI, a studio app, a CLI and MCP all read. The repo dates from mid-October, but the author's challenge-entry post is from this morning; it says 85 nodes, six apps and 72 editing tools, and one README demo, a 24-second product film, says no video-generation model was used.

How to start follow docs/SETUP.md in the repo (the README lists v0.1.1) and open the "Full workflow" described in the author's Reddit post.

SpEdE: remove, extract or replace objects in Gaussian-splat scenes (GitHub)

Per the README, you click an object in a splat scene and SAM 3.1 finds it in every capture camera, its Gaussians are deleted, and Qwen-Image 2.1 and a depth model repair the surface behind it, so the hole holds when you orbit. It can also write the object out as its own PLY or swap in a new one from a prompt; the README says it fills support surfaces such as tables and floors, is not general 3D inpainting, and fails rather than guessing.

How to start it runs locally in ComfyUI with no bundled weights, so download the listed models, load a splat scene you already own, and try Remove first.

The big story

ComfyUI's Open Source Higgsfield challenge closes Friday at 9 AM PT, and the feeds are full of open rebuilds of paid creative apps. OpenKatana is an editing engine an AI agent drives, SpEdE removes or swaps objects inside Gaussian-splat scenes, and Terraformer turns a city layout into a lit Unreal Engine level, all running locally with open weights.

A 2K refiner for MiniMax H3 drafts, Open-H3-Regenerate-2K, was released openly, and its first honest test found it very sharp but prone to changing an actor's performance. Meanwhile Claude Code and Opus 5.5 kept turning into motion-design, Blender and game-building studios.

The poster had Claude Code convert the LoRA for ComfyUI and tested a 5-second yawning-office-worker shot against SeedVR2; default strength gave a different, younger man, lower strength brought the yawn back but "woke up" the tired eyes, and it took 2 to 4 minutes per clip. A reminder thread notes it only helps if the BF16 model fits entirely in VRAM.

How this edition was made

Sweep window: about 6 AM PT on Oct 28 to 6 AM PT on Oct 29, 2026. Sources searched: the X posts gathered for this edition (each opened by ID and its text and counts re-read), YouTube search (uploads from the last day), GitHub trending (daily) and the GitHub search and repository pages, Hugging Face trending and newest uploads, Product Hunt, Hacker News, the public top-of-day feeds for r/StableDiffusion and r/comfyui (r/aivideo, r/ClaudeAI, r/blender and r/singularity blocked our tools, so they are not covered), and web search for blogs and news. Every link was checked live on Oct 29. Engagement numbers are public counts at that moment and will change; Reddit feeds don't include vote counts, so no Reddit numbers appear here. Repeats from earlier editions appear only in the updates section, with what changed.

The story of the day

The open rebuild of a paid app

Comfy's challenge page asks entrants to rebuild popular Higgsfield-style apps as working, open-source ComfyUI apps, with $10,000 for Best Overall and RTX 5090s for three special categories. Three entries in our sweep show how different the results are. OpenKatana treats editing as code an agent writes, so cuts, speed ramps and typography live in a shared project file rather than a timeline. SpEdE edits a splat scene itself: its README says the removed object's Gaussians are deleted and the hole is refilled so it holds from every camera, and it stops rather than guesses when the scene gives it no trustworthy surface. Terraformer chains Blender, ComfyUI and Unreal Engine 5.8. All three are new repos with a handful of stars at most, so read them as promising prototypes, not finished tools.

A refiner that is crisp and not always faithful

The Hugging Face page for Open-H3-Regenerate-2K describes a three-step pass from a 1344×768 draft to 2560×1440, with a 5-second clip taking 22.45 seconds on a single B200. The more useful number for most people came from a Reddit tester on an RTX 4090, who needed Claude Code to convert the LoRA and then found that at default strength a tired office worker's yawn became a different, younger man talking. They lowered the strength and got part of the performance back, and concluded the refiner suits landscapes and products better than acting close-ups. A community node now wraps it with automatic weight download, and a separate face-fix workflow targets the same blurry-face problem for 6 GB cards.

MOSS-Image grows its toolbox

MOSS-Image kept collecting add-ons: an edit LoRA, a layout node that writes box-guided prompts from a short description, a patch for shifted boxes above one megapixel, and style and pixel-art LoRAs. A user wishlist asks for something duller and more useful, a workflow that opens with its model files, node versions and settings in one place. At the other end of the size scale, AuroraIMG2 is a 50M-parameter preview that its maker says runs on a 2016 laptop CPU.

Code as the creative medium

The Claude Code posts this morning share an idea: when the output is editable code, a fix costs less than a re-roll. @0xSubarru's motion-design setup uses Remotion and FFmpeg so a flaw at frame 225 means re-rendering only those frames, MotionKit draws kinetic typography in code, and a Blender sheep-farm demo lists its whole skill and MCP stack. In games, Simon Willison wrote that October was an inflection point for vibe-coded games, with four browser games that each took him under four hours of his own time.

Hardware and the price of a clip

Apple's page for its new M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro names Comfy Desktop as an example image-generation app and claims up to 8.1 times faster text-to-image than an M1 Max, from its own preproduction tests; it ships on 6 November. On the NVIDIA side, a Reddit user measured the gpu-unlock kernel module cutting a Z-Image Turbo image from 7.46 to 4.95 seconds on an RTX 3090 with bit-identical output. For video, the X list offered three small price comparisons for a 10-second clip, with Seedance 2.5 quoted at $1.15 in one test and $2.31 in another, a reminder that the numbers depend on the plan being used.

What to watch

Entries to the challenge close at 9 AM PT on Friday. Until then, expect more repos like these: brand new, zero or a few stars, and worth a careful look before installing, as one r/comfyui newcomer asked this week. Gemini 4 Carbon reaction videos are the other loud thread, though Google's post says access is limited to a subset of cyber defenders for now.

Tell us what to dig into next: reply with a medium, a tool or a question and we'll steer tomorrow's sweep toward it.
